To Kill A Mockingbird 50th Anniversary Party at BookPeople

Remember reading this classic in high school? On the way of our seemingly endless journey to high school graduation, most of us had to read Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird and nearly all, readers and non-readers alike, were fascinated with and entranced by the book.

In celebration of 50 years of success since the publication of the novel, BookPeople is hosting a 50th Anniversary party for the novel. This upcoming Sunday (July 11) several Austin literary minds will come together to read various passages from To Kill A Mockingbird and talk about what the book has meant to them. The event is FREE, so all you have to do is show up at 7 p.m. sharp and enjoy!

To get you ready for this special event and celebration, here are a few articles that discuss To Kill A Mockingbird

– In her article Sharon Churcher gets the rare chance to interview recluse author Harper Lee and some of her close friends, discussing why Lee chose to remain out of the world’s view and didn’t publish another novel after To Kill A Mockingbird.

– In his article for Entertainment Weekly Keith Staskiewicz talks about how To Kill A Mockingbird would likely be received today by audiences and publishers. His placement of it as a young adult novel in the realm of the Harry Potter Books and the Twilight Series is an interesting conclusion. How do you feel about his judgment of how the book would be received in today’s market? What do you think would happen if Lee had published the novel in 2010 instead of 1960?

– In this blog from the New York Times online, the poster discusses Allen Barra’s bashing of the novel.

We’d like to hear from all of you! What do you think about To Kill A Mockingbird? Is it a childhood favorite or a book that was relegated to the dusty corner under your bed? Are you excited about BookPeople’s event and planning on arriving an hour early just to get an awesome seat? Let us know!
