Meet the Members

Sarah Cortez joined the Writers’ League last fall. She lives in Houston, TX.

Scribe: In what genre(s) do you write?
Sarah Cortez: I am best known for my literary poetry, but I also write literary fiction, popular fiction, memoir, traditional essay, lyric essay, academic book chapters, YA, prayers and other spiritual writing.
Scribe: What authors would you like to have coffee or a beer with and which beverage?  
SC: I would love to drink strong wine and spirits with John Donne, then stay up all night listening to him read his own work.
Scribe: If you were stranded on a deserted island, what book would you want to have with you to keep you sane?
SC: The Bible.
Scribe: What have you learned from your association with the Writers’ League?
SC: What a tremendous difference in local literary culture is made by a professionally run, proactive and friendly organization.
Scribe: Where do you see your writing taking you (or you taking it) in the future?
SC: I hope to fully engage in writing ekphrastic poetry, and further explore writing prose poems. I have a deep interest in high-quality, well-researched historical fiction, especially if romance is in the equation.
Scribe: Is there anything else about you that you would like to share with the world? An opportunity for blatant self-promotion!
SC: I encourage every writer to not engage in snobbery. In other words, don’t look down on other writers or readers because they don’t write/read what you do. There’s plenty of room for all tastes, all styles, all forms of the written word. Encourage everyone else and yourself to engage in the great mystery of creativity.
