Sisters in Crime – Mental Illness and the Law
For our November 11 program, Dr. Denae Rickenbacker will provide fundamental background on diagnostic and clinical features of certain mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, delusional disorder, traumatic brain injuries, substance abuse, amnestic disorders and seizures. Focus will include historical understanding and treatment of patients with these conditions by society, such as in sanitariums, “shock therapy” and “modern medications,” as well treatment of these patients in the legal systems throughout history following completion of a crime. Topics will also include modern-day assessments of patients with mental illness such as competency to stand trial and insanity defense, and the role of the forensic psychiatrist.
Dr. Denae Rickenbacker is board certified in psychiatry with a specialization in forensic psychiatry. Forensic psychiatry is a field at the interface between mental illness and the law, and work can involve caring for patients sent by the courts to jail or to state hospitals, evaluation of people for competency to stand trial or for insanity defense, or assessment of dangerousness. Dr. Rickenbacker completed a BS from Texas Tech in Cell and Molecular Biology then went to medical school in San Antonio at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center. She completed residency through a program that worked jointly at the University Hospital, Lackland Air Force Base, and the Veteran’s Hospital, and served her final year as Chief Resident of her program. In 2006-2007 Dr. Rickenbacker completed an additional year of training in forensic psychiatry, with emphasis at Kerrville State Hospital, Bexas County Adult and Juvenile Detention Centers, and County Clinic Jail Diversion Programs. She has worked in Cedar Park since 2008 in her adult outpatient clinic, and has special interest in crisis management, substance abuse/dependency, and women’s health issues.
Sisters in Crime Heart of Texas Chapter, meets monthly on the second Sunday of the month at 2 p.m. at the Westlake Barnes & Noble bookstore, located at the southeast corner of Loop 360 and Bee Cave Road, in The Village at Westlake shopping center.
Sisters in Crime is an international organization of women and men whose purpose is to promote mysteries written by women, and combat discrimination against women mystery authors. Speakers include published mystery authors and technical experts who help writers craft better mysteries and readers enjoy what they read. Meetings are free and open to all. Nicholas Evan Sarantakes, author of Making Patton: A Classic War Film’s Epic Journey to the Silver Screen, will sign copies of his book at the Round Rock Barnes & Noble store on Saturday, December 1st at 2:00 p.m. The store is located in the La Frontera Village at the intersection of IH-35 and SH-45.
Forever known for its blazing cinematic image of General George S. Patton (portrayed by George C. Scott) addressing his troops in front of a mammoth American flag, Patton won seven Oscars in 1971, including those for Best Picture and Best Actor. In doing so, it beat out a much-ballyhooed M*A*S*H, irreverent darling of the critics, and grossed $60 million despite an intense anti-war climate. But as Nicholas Evans Sarantakes reveals, it was a film that almost didn’t get made.
Sarantakes offers an engaging and richly detailed production history of what became a critically acclaimed box office hit. He takes readers behind the scenes, even long before any scenes were ever conceived, to recount the trials and tribulations that attended the epic efforts of producer Frank McCarthy-like Patton a U.S. Army general-and Twentieth Century Fox to finally bring Patton to the screen after eighteen years of planning.
Sarantakes recounts how filmmakers had to overcome the reluctance of Patton’s family,copyright issues with biographers, competing efforts for a biopic, and Department of Defense red tape. He chronicles the long search for a leading man-including discussions with Burt Lancaster, John Wayne, and even Ronald Reagan-before settling on Scott, a brilliant actor who brought to the part both enthusiasm for the project and identification with Patton’s passionate persona. He also tracks the struggles to shoot the movie with a large multinational cast, huge outlays for military equipment, and filming in six countries over a mere six months. And he provides revealing insider stories concerning, for example, Scott’s legendary drinking bouts and the origins and debate over his famous opening monologue.

Meet the Author J.A. Jance @ Ruiz Branch

J.A. Jance is the New York Times bestselling author of the Ali Reynolds series, the J.P. Beaumont series, the Joanna Brady series, as well as four interrelated Southwestern thrillers featuring the Walker family. Jance was born in South Dakota and brought up in Brisbee, Arizona. She is a graduate of the University of Arizona. Before becoming an author, she worked as a school librarian on a Native American reservation, as a teacher, and selling insurance. She lives with her husband in Seattle, Washington, and Tucson, Arizona.

Author Justin Torres to hold readings at Wittliff, Porter House – San Marcos
The Katherine Anne Porter Literary Center and the Wittliff Collections at Texas State University will host readings and book signings from author Justin Torres Nov. 1-2. Torres will speak and sign copies of his books at the Wittliff Collections located on the seventh floor of Alkek Library on the Texas State campus 3:30 p.m. Nov. 1. He will also give a reading and book signing at the Katherine Anne Porter Literary Center in Kyle 7:30 p.m. Nov. 2. The events are free and open to the public.
Torres is the author of We the Animals, which is his debut novel. His work has appeared in Granta, Tin House and Glimmer Train. A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, he was the recipient of a Rolon Fellowship in Literature from United States Artists. Currently, he is a Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford. He has worked as a farmhand, a dog walker, a creative writing teacher and a bookseller.
The event is sponsored by the Burdine Johnson Foundation, the Wittliff Collection and the Texas State University Department of English. Books will be available during and after the event through the University Bookstore and Barnes and Noble.

Harry Ransom Center Event
The Harry Ransom Center’s Curator of Photography Jessica S. McDonald speaks with photographer, curator, and educator Nathan Lyons about his career and role in the expansion of American photography on Thursday, November 8, at 7 p.m.
As a curator, theorist, educator, artist, and advocate, Nathan Lyons has played a central role in the expansion of photography over the last five decades. After producing seminal exhibitions and publications as curator at George Eastman House in Rochester, New York, in the 1960s, he founded the Visual Studies Workshop, an independent arts organization where his innovative programs trained a new generation of photographers, critics, curators, and historians.
McDonald edited the anthology Nathan Lyons: Selected Essays, Lectures, and Interviews (UT Press, 2012), which provides the first comprehensive overview of Lyons’s career as one of the most important voices in American photography.
