Palooka is a nonprofit literary magazine seeking fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, plays, graphic short stories, graphic essays, comic strips, artwork, photography, and multimedia for their next issue. They offer print and electronic versions of the magazine and offer samples of the published materials online. They’re determined to find those writers and artists who are hungry and relevant, flying under the radar, producing great works that are going unnoticed by other magazines. The 2012 Do the Write Thing Writing Workshop promises exciting sessions including 50 Shades of Writing, Poetry Writing Institute, Digital Publishing, and Writing Fantasy Fiction plus manuscript critiques. This year’s featured speakers include award winner Ann Weisgarber, national spoken word artist Michael Guinn, fantasy fiction author Urania Fung and author/conference founder Shewanda Riley.

The Craft of Writing Series 2012 sponsored by the Writer’s Block – Dallas

Film Financing and Foreign Distribution: New Trends and Successful Formulas in the 2012 Market Place with James Ordonez
James Ordonez is an Executive Producer, Distributor, Financier, President, and partner of the International production and distribution company Tayrona Entertainment group.
Ordonez is currently behind thirty films in all budget ranges. His successful strategy has greenlighted over $470 million in production budgets in 2012 and 2013 budgets, as well as over $100 million in Latin American and domestic releases.
Topics that will be covered in the seminar will include: making your movie a reality; how to see real profits and get backend participation; the reality of equity, tax credits and presales; and why the old &traditional film financing models don’t work anymore.

Stopfakes.gov: An Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Seminar – Corpus Christi

It is difficult to overstate the value of intellectual property rights to innovation, investment and economic development. IPR protection and enforcement are critical to the success of U.S. businesses, including SMEs, and to the U.S. economy as a whole. STOPfakes.gov was launched to serve as a one-stop shop for U.S. Government tools and resources on intellectual property rights (IPR). The federal agencies behind STOPfakes.gov have developed a number of resources to educate and assist businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), as well as consumers, government officials, and the general public. This informative program will feature presentations by intellectual property experts and law enforcement officials, followed by an open discussion with experts from industry and government. The program will end with the opportunity to meet one-on-one with experts.

About Lisa Chow:
A native Houstonian and self-taught artist, Lisa Chow graduated from The University of Texas in Austin with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. While working in information technology, she slowly started showing her art in local businesses and art markets. After a few years of unfulfilling corporate work and constant daydreams of becoming a ‘real’ artist, Lisa finally made the leap to pursue art full-time. Now, Lisa’s work can be found in private collections all over the world and her clients stretch from musicians to the technology industry.

Fall 2012 Exhibitions + Events
Furthering the cultural legacy of the region’s literary and photographic arts and fostering “the spirit of place” in the wider world, THE WITTLIFF COLLECTIONS welcome visitors, tours, and classes, host readings, book signings, artist talks, and other events, assist researchers, and present changing exhibitions from their archival repositories in over 6,600 square feet of viewing space. Located on the top floor of the Alkek Library at Texas State University in San Marcos. Admission is free.

FROM UNCERTAIN TO BLUE: Photographs by Keith Carter

In the 1980s, Keith Carter and his wife, Patricia, visited over 100 small Texas towns with intriguing names like Diddy Waw Diddy, Paradise, and Mount Calm. Keith’s method was simple and practical: one town, one photograph. Although he would take several rolls of film in each place, Keith selected only one representative image to print then titled the photographs with the names of the small towns. Thirteen images from this series—plus the road map the Carters used to chart their project — are on display from the Wittliff Collections’ major holding of Keith Carter’s work. Texas Monthly Press published From Uncertain to Blue in 1988, and 23 years later the University of Texas Press published a new version with field notes from Patricia Carter. Pat’s notes are included in this exhibition, which is installed on the first floor of Texas State’s Alkek Library.
