Palooka is seeking new material for an upcoming issue, and would love to check out pieces by the Alpine Summer Retreat students! Palooka is a nonprofit literary magazine seeking fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, plays, graphic short stories, graphic essays, comic strips, artwork, photography, and multimedia for their next issue. They offer print and electronic versions of the magazine and offer samples of the published materials online. They’re determined to find those writers and artists who are hungry and relevant, flying under the radar, producing great works that are going unnoticed by other magazines. The Paris Literary Prize Competition
The Paris Literary Prize is an international novella competition for unpublished writers. Any topic is welcome. The Paris Literary Prize celebrates this small but perfectly formed genre while giving a unique opportunity to writers whose voices have not yet been heard. Awards include: The Paris Literary Prize award: 10,000 Euros ~ Two Paris Literary Prize Runner-up awards: 2,000 Euros each. All three winners will be invited to a weekend stay in Paris to attend the Prize ceremony and read from their work at a special event at Shakespeare and Company. Brenda R. Brittain, author of The Seven Courses of Christianity will sign copies of her book at the Round Rock Barnes & Noble store on Saturday, September 8th at 2:00 p.m. The store is located in the La Frontera Village at the intersection of IH-35 and SH-45.

Criminal Law for Crime Writers – The villain has committed the dastardly deed, and has been doggedly run to ground by the intrepid protagonist. So what happens next? In his August 12 presentation of Criminal Law for Crime Writers, Adrian Eissler takes the Sisters in Crime into the framework of Texas criminal law, laying a foundation for members to conduct efficient legal research into the points of Texas criminal law that may be relevant to their works.
The presentation will first cover some of the key sources of criminal law in Texas, including the Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, Rules of Evidence, appellate opinions, and the U.S. Constitution. Delving further into these sources, we’ll discuss points of law that may be of particular interest in plot development, including culpable mental states, transferred intent, causation, accomplice liability, self-defense, insanity, and death penalty issues. Finally, we’ll dust off a fascinating case from 1898 that highlights the wealth of powerful stories to be found in the old case reporters in law libraries.
Sisters in Crime Heart of Texas Chapter, meets monthly on the second Sunday of the month at 2 p.m. at the Westlake Barnes & Noble bookstore, located at the southeast corner of Loop 360 and Bee Cave Road, in The Village at Westlake shopping center.
Sisters in Crime is an international organization of women and men whose purpose is to promote mysteries written by women, and combat discrimination against women mystery authors. Speakers include published mystery authors and technical experts who help writers craft better mysteries and readers enjoy what they read. Meetings are free and open to all. Made in Texas Film Series: Adaptations – IN COLD BLOOD

Austin Film Festival and the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum present the “Made in Texas Film Series,” a program of films made by Texas based filmmakers or filmed in Texas, sponsored by the Texas Film Commission.
The final event in AFF’s Made in Texas: Adaptations film series! The true story of two psychopaths who murdered a middleclass family, from the crime to their own execution. Based on the classic 1966 book by famed author Truman Capote, this film adaptation, written and directed by Richard Brooks, is as incendiary as the source novel, with unforgettable performances from Robert Blake and Scott Wilson as the two murderers.
IN COLD BLOOD is considered a defining work in the true crime drama, and AFF is thrilled to have crime and mystery author Joe R. Lansdale in attendance at the screening for a Q&A. Lansdale, whose stories have been turned into films (BUBBA HO-TEP, INCIDENT ON AND OFF A MOUNTAIN ROAD) and has also written for television (Batman: The Animated Series), will discuss the influence of IN COLD BLOOD on the true crime genre and discuss his own approach to crime writing.

Authored by master chef Yara Castro Roberts-the first Brazilian chef to write about Brazilian cuisine in English. She gives an intimate look at the regions of Minas Gerais, the Amazon, the Cerado, and Bahia from a food perspective, not only introducing one hundred delicious recipes but also providing an in-depth cultural lesson on the regions and their unique foods. The Brazilian Table also features photography by Richard Barclay Roberts.
