Meet the Members

Katy Pando joined the Writers’ League earlier this year and is attending the 2015 Agents & Editors Conference in June. She lives in Houston’s historic Montrose neighborhood.

Scribe: In what genre(s) do you write?
Katy Pando: Nonfiction. Originally a small town newspaper photojournalist and editor, non-fiction is my passion. Historical research drives my enthusiasm for my work. Like many writers, I do enjoy scrapping out a whimsical short story on occasion.
Scribe: What authors would you like to have coffee or a beer with and which beverage?
KP: A gin and tonic with Dorothy Parker. Afternoon coffee with Carson McCullers, Harper Lee and Flannery O’Connor. Actually, my list is ridiculous because it also includes beer with Molly Ivins and Fannie Flag, followed by an espresso with David McCullough.
Scribe: If you were stranded on a deserted island, what book would you want to have with you to keep you sane?
KP: My first preference would be a blank-paged journal, allowing me to record my experiences. If a pencil didn’t come with the journal, I’d opt for A Survivor’s Guide to a Deserted Island where I could learn to make a pencil or, more likely, Richard Halliburton’s Book of Marvels.
Scribe: What have you learned from your association with the Writers’ League?
KP: The Writers’ League provides both educational and networking opportunities – two key elements for any writer striving to improve her work. I am looking forward to attending my first conference this summer.
Scribe: Where do you see your writing taking you (or you taking it) in the future?
KP: Right now, I am focused on finishing a biography (co-author) on Oveta Culp Hobby. The experience is both gratifying and inspirational. When completed, I’d love to tackle another biography, once again focusing on a lesser known but accomplished subject.
Scribe: Is there anything else about you that you would like to share with the world? An opportunity for blatant self-promotion!
KP: If anyone has research or photography needs in southeast Texas, my work is good and I think bartering is cool. Occasionally I work for food and drink!
