Puerto Rican Folklore Dance Events
“Contribution of Puerto Rican Women to the Garment Industry Labor Movement”
Sponsored by La Pena through a grant from Humanity Texas, Dr. Maynard’s research presents a powerful tribute to Puerto Rican women who contributed to efforts to improve working conditions for New York City garment industry workers in the first half of the 20th century. Dr. Maynard is a recognized expert resource on the mainland US for Puerto Rico’s cultural history and traditions. PRFDance at Fan Fest 2012 – Formula-1 Celebration – Nov 18, 3-4pm
The City of Austin has invited PRFDance to perform for FanFest, the massive festival celebrating the 2012 Formula-1 US Grand Prix, on Nov. 18th, 2012. Our city is expecting 300,000 visitors, many from around the world!

Storyteller, singer, songwriter, and author, W.C. Jameson, will be at the Barnes & Noble Arboretum store on Saturday, 11/17, at 2:00pm.
W.C. will be reading from his new book Butch Cassidy: Beyond the Grave, which explores the myths and mythology of Cassidy’s life. This book is exceptionally well researched and explores not only Cassidy’s life in the United States, but his time in Bolivia–exploring the controversial question about whether or not Butch survived the shoot-out made infamous by Robert Redford and Paul Newman. W.C. is also available for interview.

Austin Public Library Event
Join us for an evening of conversation with J.A. Jance, author of over 40 novels, many of which were on the New York Times Best Seller list, on Thursday, November 15 at 7 p.m. at the Ruiz Branch, 1600 Grove Blvd. Her newest book is Judgment Call, a twisted mystery set in the beauty and isolation of the Arizona desert. J.A. Jance is the New York Times bestselling author of the Ali Reynolds series, the J.P. Beaumont series, the Joanna Brady series, as well as four interrelated Southwestern thrillers featuring the Walker family. Jance was born in South Dakota and brought up in Brisbee, Arizona. She is a graduate of the University of Arizona. Before becoming an author, she worked as a school librarian on a Native American reservation, as a teacher, and selling insurance. She lives with her husband in Seattle, Washington, and Tucson, Arizona.

Austin Poetry Society Event
November 17, Saturday, 1:30-3:30 p.m. APS meets at Twin Oaks Branch Library, 1800 South 5th at West Mary, for a Thanksgiving Open Microphone. Bring your poems to read, especially poems about the Thanksgiving holiday or just poems of gratitude. Poets who placed in the Poetry Society of Texas contests (announced November 10th), should give thanks for their awards by reading them for us. If you want a head start, write a new poem with the first line, “Today we need a poem about…” Turn in entries for our General and Humorous Verse contests; awards announced in the December meeting. Only members can enter the contests: no fee is required. All our meetings are free and open to the public.

Diane Gonzales Bertrand signs her newest children’s picture book, Sofia and the Purple Dress November 10, 10 AM.

John Kerr, Fell the Angels: The Case of the Priory Murder – Monday, Nov. 12, 5:00-7:00PM.
A novel based on a true unsolved murder by poisoning in Victorian-era London. Sisters in Crime – Mental Illness and the Law
For our November 11 program, Dr. Denae Rickenbacker will provide fundamental background on diagnostic and clinical features of certain mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, delusional disorder, traumatic brain injuries, substance abuse, amnestic disorders and seizures. Focus will include historical understanding and treatment of patients with these conditions by society, such as in sanitariums, “shock therapy” and “modern medications,” as well treatment of these patients in the legal systems throughout history following completion of a crime. Topics will also include modern-day assessments of patients with mental illness such as competency to stand trial and insanity defense, and the role of the forensic psychiatrist.
Dr. Denae Rickenbacker is board certified in psychiatry with a specialization in forensic psychiatry. Forensic psychiatry is a field at the interface between mental illness and the law, and work can involve caring for patients sent by the courts to jail or to state hospitals, evaluation of people for competency to stand trial or for insanity defense, or assessment of dangerousness. Dr. Rickenbacker completed a BS from Texas Tech in Cell and Molecular Biology then went to medical school in San Antonio at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center. She completed residency through a program that worked jointly at the University Hospital, Lackland Air Force Base, and the Veteran’s Hospital, and served her final year as Chief Resident of her program. In 2006-2007 Dr. Rickenbacker completed an additional year of training in forensic psychiatry, with emphasis at Kerrville State Hospital, Bexas County Adult and Juvenile Detention Centers, and County Clinic Jail Diversion Programs. She has worked in Cedar Park since 2008 in her adult outpatient clinic, and has special interest in crisis management, substance abuse/dependency, and women’s health issues.
Sisters in Crime Heart of Texas Chapter, meets monthly on the second Sunday of the month at 2 p.m. at the Westlake Barnes & Noble bookstore, located at the southeast corner of Loop 360 and Bee Cave Road, in The Village at Westlake shopping center.
Sisters in Crime is an international organization of women and men whose purpose is to promote mysteries written by women, and combat discrimination against women mystery authors. Speakers include published mystery authors and technical experts who help writers craft better mysteries and readers enjoy what they read. Meetings are free and open to all. Curators’ Tour of I Have Seen the Future: Norman Bel Geddes Designs America Tour at the Harry Ransom Center
Cathy Henderson, Associate Director for Exhibitions, and Helen Baer, Associate Curator of Performing Arts, lead a tour of the exhibition I Have Seen the Future: Norman Bel Geddes Designs America on Thursday, November 15, at 7 PM at the Harry Ransom Center.
Norman Bel Geddes (1893–1958) was an innovative stage and industrial designer, futurist, and urban planner who, more than any designer of his era, created and promoted a dynamic vision of the future—streamlined, technocratic, and optimistic. Bel Geddes popularized this vision through drawings, models, and photographs of spectacular vehicles, buildings, and products featured in his books Horizons and Magic Motorways. His most notable effort was his Futurama display for the General Motors “Highways and Horizons” exhibit at the 1939–1940 New York World’s Fair, which adopted the motto “I Have Seen the Future.” Futurama’s giant model of a 1960 future American city gave Depression-era Americans genuine hope for a better future within their lifetimes.
The exhibition explores the career of this complex and influential man through more than 60 projects from the Ransom Center’s Norman Bel Geddes collection. The exhibition brings together never-before-exhibited drawings, models, photographs, and films.
The event is free, but donations are welcome. Attendees at the event may enter to win a Bel Geddes-inspired package.
