Conference V – Houston Writers’ Guild

Friday, October 12th ~ 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Workshop #1 ~ April Eberhardt on “An Agents View of Self-Publishing.”

April works with serious authors who recognize the need for professional support, and the importance of publishing in the highest-quality way, be it traditionally or independently. Agent-vetted manuscripts help independently-published authors stand out from the millions of others, and contribute to raising the bar for independent publishing, garnering recognition and sales for those authors who understand and commit to “self-publishing, done right.”

Workshop #2 ~ Nikki Loftin on “Build your writing toolkit.”
No one does it like Nikki Loftin, easily voted the most entertaining and instructive lecturer of our entire faculty at the Spring conference. Nikki will present a 3 hour hand-on workshop for any genre, where folks come in with ideas/rough sketches and leave with polished queries, pitches, and improvement on their opening pages.

Saturday, October 13th ~ 9:00 am – 4:30 pm
Margie Lawson on “Empowering Character’s Emotions.” Want to add a psychological punch to your writing? Want to learn how to capture the full range of body language on the page? Want to turn your work into a page-turner by powering up emotions and hooking the reader viscerally? Learn the “edits” system. Basic, complex empowered and super-empowered passages: Backstory management, Kinesics, Haptics, Proxemics, Facial expressions, Paralanguage and much more.
The conference will be held at the Sugar Land Marriot Hotel 16090 City Walk Sugar Land, Texas 77479. For more information on Agents and what else the conference has to offer for writers, click here.

No nonmember surcharge if you write EMMA on your application. Appointments still available. It’s $35 dollars per agent. Use paypal or mail your check. Visit their website for more information or email a representative.

Sisters in Crime Event – A Collision of Forensic Science and Politics

Our October 14 speaker, Gerald Hurst, a chemist and inventor, offers his services for free to help individuals he feels were wrongly convicted of arson. Hurst said he became disgusted by fire investigations based more on ‘old wives’ tales and folklore’ than science. He long ago took to wearing all-black clothing to hide the marks of soot, and he works out of a home office in the basement of his west Austin house.

Jerry has a bachelor, graduate, and Ph.D. in Chemistry and has worked for various companies investigating explosives and arson techniques. He is currently self employed and has about a dozen patents in the field of explosives in the US and foreign countries.

He is experienced in the study of the initiation, mechanism, prevention and analysis of fires and explosions dating back 45 years and including work with both military and civilian government agencies including FBI, BATF, US Forest Service, etc. He is the inventor of Kinepak (binary explosive), “mylar” balloon and the modern Liquid Paper formulations.

“I see fire as a bunch of physical chemical processes,” he said. “I came up using my science background and running experiments, and I had years of access to testing facilities (as a corporate scientist from 1965-80), so anytime I wanted to blow something up or test an idea, I could.”

Sisters in Crime Heart of Texas Chapter, meets monthly on the second Sunday of the month at 2 p.m. at the Westlake Barnes & Noble bookstore, located at the southeast corner of Loop 360 and Bee Cave Road, in The Village at Westlake shopping center.

Sisters in Crime is an international organization of women and men whose purpose is to promote mysteries written by women, and combat discrimination against women mystery authors. Speakers include published mystery authors and technical experts who help writers craft better mysteries and readers enjoy what they read. Meetings are free and open to all. For more information, check out the Sisters in Crime website at www.hotxsinc.org.

Cara Coffey, author of Uncovered No More, Volume 2, will sign copies of her books at the Round Rock Barnes & Noble store on Saturday, November 17th at 2:00 p.m. The store is located in the La Frontera Village at the intersection of IH-35 and SH-45.

In Uncovered No More Volume 2 (Tate Publishing, 2012). Cara Coffey continues her testimony from her first book, Uncovered No More. However, she also tells a different

story in this second volume. She writes of the hope she sees as a woman who has walked with prophetic gifting in the United States. She testifies of a prophetic childbearing journey the Lord allowed in her life. She has labored in prayer for many years, and it is Cara’s hope that America will see repentance, deliverance, restoration, and revival within Christianity and also nationwide.

Cara has experienced and witnessed the difficulty of grassroots Christian people connecting at their congregation and home level. Delve into Uncovered No More Volume 2 and observe Cara’s prophetic thoughts on what she feels could help the body of Christ across America.
