Glimmer Train’s Fiction Open ~ Deadline: September 30, 2012
Prizes: 1st place now wins $2,500 and, of course, publication in Glimmer Train Stories.
2nd place wins $1,000 and possible publication.
3rd place wins $600 or, if published, $700.
Winners and finalists will be contacted by November 30, and results will be officially announced in the December 1 bulletin. Most submissions to the Fiction Open run 2,000 to 8,000 words, but from 2,000 to 20,000-word stories are welcome. Reading fee is $19 per story. Please, no more than 3 submissions per category. Author Olga Broumas to hold readings at Wittliff, KAP House – San Marcos
The Katharine Anne Porter Literary Center and the Wittliff Collections at Texas State University-San Marcos will host readings and book signings from author Olga Broumas Sept. 27-28. Broumas will speak and sign copies of her books at the Wittliff Collections located on the seventh floor of Alkek Library on the Texas State Campus 3:30 p.m. Sept. 27. She will also give a reading and book signing at the Katharine Anne Porter Literary Center in Kyle 7:30 p.m. Sept. 28. The events are free and open to the public.
Broumas is the author of the following books of poetry: Beginning with O; Soie Sauvage; Pastoral Jazz; With Jane Miller: Black Holes, Black Stockings; Perpetua; With T. Begley: Sappho’s Gymnasium; and Rave: Poems, 1975-1999. She has also translated the books What I Love: Selected Poems by Odysseas Elytis; The Little Mariner by Odysseas Elytis; and Eros, Eros, Eros: Selected and Last Poems by Odysseas Elytis. She is the director of creative writing and a professor of English at Brandeis University.
The event is sponsored by the Burdine Johnson Foundation, the Witcliff Collections and the Texas State University Department of English. Books will be available during and after the event through the University Bookstore and Barnes and Noble. Darker Times Fiction is host to a monthly short story competition open to UK and international writers. We accept stories up to 3,000 words on the theme of ‘darker times’. While we focus on horror stories, we also accept entries linked to the theme of ‘darker times’ in other ways; we encourage writers to be as creative as they like!
The competition closes on the last day of each month at midnight GMT and winners and runners up will be announced on the 5th of the next month. Any entries received after midnight on the last day of the month will be put into the next month’s competition.
Entries cost £5 / $8 each and can be paid online via paypal. Multiple entries are accepted. Each month, there will be one winner and three runners up. Depending on the number of entries, there may be some ‘honorable mentions’ as well. The winner will receive a percentage of the money raised by entry fees, a minimum of £15 / $24, plus they will get their short story published in one of our Darker Times Horror Anthologies, released as an ebook and paperback through Amazon. Runners up and honorable mentions will not receive a cash prize but they will get their story published in an anthology, and all anthologies will include a short bio of all the writers featured. All stories will also be published on the Darker Times Fiction website with their author bio and a link to their website/blog; we want to promote new writers as much as we can! Austin Creative Alliance (ACA) and Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts (TALA) are proud to present Austin attorney Chris Castle’s “Four Nights of Music Rights” seminar series in September and October 2012 hosted by the Long Center. The series consists of four evening seminars that will cover intermediate and advanced-level music business rights and protections and related legal issues for managers, music industry businesses, lawyers, artists, songwriters, and music technology companies. CLE credit is offered for each seminar through TALA.
Each seminar will have a specific focus area for lecture and discussion. Some seminars will also include guest speakers with expertise relevant to the topic. The final 30 minutes of each seminar will also include “Band Basics”, a practical guide to getting and keeping a band’s business in order.
Attendance is free of charge, but advance registration is required. The seminars will be held at the AT&T Conference Room at the Long Center from 7pm to 10pm on alternating Tuesdays from September 18th – October 30th.
CLE credit will be $20 per night. Each night has been approved for credit between 2-2.5 hours.
Registration and networking starts at 6:30.
Seminars take place in the AT&T meeting room at The Long Center and begin promptly at 7pm.

Tom Gimbel is the General Manager of the KLRU television show – Austin City Limits. Austin City Limits is the longest running music show in American television history, the only television program ever awarded the National Medal of the Arts, a certified Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Landmark, and in 2012 the recipient of an institutional Peabody Award celebrating “37 years of excellence in television.”

Brian’s diverse events experience includes live production for a USO tour through Iraq/UAE/Dubai/North Africa, BB King’s Blues Fest, 101X Fest on Auditorium Shores, SXSW, and a Los Lonely Boys DVD shoot, among others.

Call for Submissions: Fresh Arts Exhibition Proposals

Fresh Arts is a non-profit organization and arts resource center actively seeking proposals from Houston-based artists for exhibitions in its ARC Exhibition series. Fresh Arts seeks to provide emerging and established visual and performing artists with an alternative space to showcase their work outside of a commercial gallery or performance venue.
In furthering its mission to provide economic and professional development opportunities for artists, Fresh Arts dedicates time and resources to mentoring each exhibiting artist along the process of presenting a public exhibition, from marketing, to pricing, presentation skills, cultivating clientele, and more.
Fresh Arts is located within Winter Street Studios (2101 Winter Street) in the Arts District of Houston’s Historic First Ward.

This day is the UN International Day of Peace. ZaBoomBa will lead an interactive community drumming on West African Djembe drums and other instruments. Faraz Nizami will dazzle the audience with his Tabla in the Sufi tradition. Students of the Music and English Departments of HT will offer a conversation between spoken word and jazz drums. Parking is limited, so please come early or car-pool.

2013 BLUECAT SCREENPLAY COMPETITION – EARLY DEADLINE – SEPTEMBER 16th, 2012
Founded and judged by award-winning screenwriter Gordy Hoffman, BlueCat has developed a keen eye for exposing screenwriting talent through our diligent and committed analysis of each submission. For nearly fifteen years, BlueCat’s recognition and development of undiscovered screenwriters from around the world has paved the way for many of our writers, including: Signings by major agencies like UTA, CAA and WME; Selling work to studios like Warner Bros, Paramount and Universal; And most importantly, seeing their work produced on the big screen.
In nearly every occasion, the awards and honor bestowed by BlueCat proved to be the first professional acknowledgment for the writer. Recently, BlueCat winner THE MAN IN THE REVIEW MIRROR, by Andy Pagana and Justin Thomas, sold for low-mid six figures. And BlueCat Finalist Aaron Guzikowski’s CONTRABAND, starring Mark Wahlberg, was released by Universal.
PRIZES
Grand Prize Winner -The winner of the BlueCat Screenplay will receive $10,000.
Finalists – Four finalists receive $2,000 each.
The Cordelia Award – The best screenplay from the UK will be awarded the Cordelia Award and will receive $1,000.
The Joplin Award – The best screenplay from outside the USA,Canada and the UK will be awarded the Joplin Award and will receive $1,000.
RESUBMISSION: Any screenplay submitted before October 15th can be resubmitted by November 15th, for the reduced fee of $40. Resubmission entries will receive one analysis.
