We’re mixing it up here at the Writer’s League and bringing you weekly writing prompts to help get those creative juices flowing! Here’s what we have for you today…
Choose one of your favorite poems and look at the last line (or, if you prefer fiction, choose one of your favorite paragraphs and look at the last line). Use this line to think of something that could go along with the title you have chosen. Use this line as the subject of your work and write about how it makes you feel, or how you think others would react to it.
Here’s an example:
We chose a famous poem translated by Paul Celan titled “Fugue of Death”. There is a repeating line that is just fascinating: “Black milk of daybreak we drink it at nightfall / we drink it at noon in the morning we drink it at night.”
Here’s what we came up with:
The black milk spoils in her basement.
Golden strands of hair in a hairbrush lost
in the rust of nightfall.
It is desolate and desperate,
the silent screaming of darkness,
the little fungal spots in circling coils.
